After the colorful carnival of Tenerife, it's silence and the solemnity of this religious event. La Semana Santa de La Laguna, is one of the most important legacies of religious art in the Canaries. La Laguna is the religious capital of the island, and innigualable historic center, declared World Heritage Site, welcomes relevant processions, accompanied by their many sororities and fraternities.
It is regarded by some scholars as the oldest festival of the island, dating in 1497 after the conquest. Carpets, families, associations, schools, social groups ... produced each year in the streets of the historic lagoon wonderful carpets of flower petals, colored marble and heather, starting the night before to draw and make the carpets on the floor. Since this is a singular expression of ephemeral art and beauty of the called party rounds off the flowers.
San Benito Abad, patron of farmers Harriers from 1534, starring one of the most significant demonstrations of the Canaries. Your Regional Pilgrimage, declared of National Tourist Interest, is held every second Sunday of July.
In their journey, the pilgrims, dressed in traditional costumes and singing the folk songs of our own, provide the viewer from the carts as local produce hard-boiled eggs, gofio, wrinkled potatoes ... This colorful festival is an excellent opportunity to learn about popular culture from the Canary Islands.
The people of Tejina celebrated every August 24 in honor of their Patron Saint Bartholomew. September is noted in San Cristobal de La Laguna. With more than four centuries of history, has become a symbol of identity of the town of Valle de Guerra. Held the first Saturday in October, inspired by the Battle of Lepanto, which occurred in 1571 between the fleet of the Turkish Empire and the Christian army of the Holy League. Staged various moments of this historic event as the parade of ships of the Virgin and the representation of Battleship. This traditional cultural and ethnographic manifestaci?on accompanied by specially selected music and colorful pyrotechnic effects. Declared of Cultural Interest in 2007.
